The Strategy Of Friendship

Categories: Devotional,Matthew

With the long-ranged view of life in mind what kind of human relationship do you think lasts the longest? Select from the following four options which one you think can be the most enduring:

a. husband and wife
b. parent and child
c. friends
d. brother and sister

The answer, from God’s perspective, is “c”— friendship outlasts all other human relationships because only friendship can be eternal.

So, for instance, being a father or mother, husband or wife, may be a privilege you enjoy now, even one that may seem to never end, but no person will ever be a parent with children in heaven, or be married in heaven. Jesus said this will be so when he told some listeners, “in heaven there is no marrying or being given in marriage” (Mt. 22:30).

Being a dad or a mom, brother or sister, son or daughter, husband or wife, may be a wonderful part of life today, but all of those relationships from an eternal perspective are fleeting.

The great and unique part of having a friend and being one is that friendship can last beyond the grave.

Why not, then, make it your strategy in this life to cultivate friendships that will last forever?
